MSM Series from SCHURTER

Robust Switches and Latching Action Switches for Rough Application Conditions

SCHURTER has developed the new MSM series of switches and latching action switches especially for protection against vandalism as well as for use under extreme ambient conditions. These switches and latching action switches are used in units situated in rough industrial environments as well as for applications with public access. Typical demands from these business areas include impact strength, the high impermeability protection class for protecting against vandalism or damage due to improper handling.

The attractive stainless steel appearance of this series also renders it suitable for applications where design considerations play an important role. The broad variety of switch types makes it possible to select switches or latching action switches that are best suited to the specific technical and design requirements. Different mounting diameters, switch types, methods of mounting, housing materials and illumination colors provide the design basis.
The MSM series has continuously progressed to meet the ever increasing demands from the various application areas. The first MSM types were developed for mounting diameters of between 16 and 20 mm, and were launched onto the market in 2005. In order to also provide customers with the possibility of optical feedback, this type was then provided with point and ring illumination. To meet the demands required for an operating switch that caters to the needs of the disabled, the MSM 30, with its large actuating surface, was developed in 2006. The MSM DP developed in 2007 made a double-pole switch available within the MSM range. The MSM DP is used in devices where two separate switch contacts are required for potential-free connection to the electricity supply. It is also used in applications where an additional second switch contact is needed for a safety circuit.
The latest product in the MSM series is the MSM LA switch. With the MSM LA, the robust metal switch of the MSM family is now available as a latching action switch. The switching status (ON / OFF) is easy to discern by looking at the resting position of the actuator. The latching action switch is designed with galvanically isolated contacts, and may be used as a single or double-pole switch solution. The use of the MSM LA is possible at an operating voltage of between 30 VDC and 250 VAC at a maximum switching current of 12 A.
With the increase in self-service stations in the area of information, vending and ticketing, the demand for robust and reliable operating elements has also risen. The robust metal switches find application worldwide in ticket terminals, public transport systems, information booths, access-control terminals, construction machines and control panels for industrial facilities, as well as in gas stations and sanitary facilities.
Within the area of metal switches, SCHURTER has developed a completely backlit actuating surface for the switches. The new MSM CS metal switch from SCHURTER is equipped with an actuator made of highly durable ceramic. Ceramic is a new technology employed in the production of an electro-mechanical switch. The new switch provides novel features that open up entirely new areas of application. The actuator material of the MSM CS is resistant to scratches, abrasion, impact and chemicals. The non-illuminated version has a translucent white actuating surface. Lettering is black and is applied directly onto the ceramic material. Due to the base material and the lettering process, the lettering is resistant to scratches and to common cleaning agents. In the case of switches designed with illumination, the actuator surface fully illuminates uniformly across the entire surface. Lettering and symbols can also be applied. The standard black lettering provides a positive effect against the illuminated actuator, while negative lettering provides an inverse effect. The MSM CS is extremely robust and meets vandal-proof demands due to the low profile of the front structure (1.7 mm), the IP 69K protection class and the high level of impact resistance.
